The American Control Conference will be hosting an Opportunity Matching event at the 2027 ACC, July 6, in Philadelphia, intended to synergize industry-academic collaboration. Practitioners from the process control industry have generated a wish-list of top 17 items in response to the question, “What improvements in process control would permit next-level practicable applications?” Researchers are now invited to submit a one-page description of what they might do to support development of the solution. Visit ACC 2027 and use the link at the top of the page for details. By the end of February, the top 10 or so proposals will be selected for presentation at the workshop, followed by discussion related to practicability, context, auxiliary issues, and establishing credibility.
Expected benefit for industry:
• Learn of possible solutions that have been out of their sight in journal publications.
• Find possible collaborators to support technique evaluation and development.
• Discover where to target recruiting for control positions or to hire summer interns to investigate solutions to implementation barriers.
• Influence academic research and teaching.
Expected benefit for academe:
• Learn of novel ideas for research that have strong motivation in societal relevance, which will strengthen proposals for funding. (There is no implication that participating companies will be funding selected proposals, but they might!)
• Obtain feedback on issues and ancillary considerations that will strengthen research proposals.
• Find collaborators who could provide data or experimental implementations for ideas, strengthening credibility in manuscripts for publication.
The deadline for submitting one-page descriptions of research to support a wish-list item is January 15, 2027. But we prefer earlier! The window is open now.
Registration for the Opportunity Matching event will be free, but on a first-come basis until space is filled. Registration will open at the end of February.
Once all proposals for solutions have been submitted they will be posted on the web site to enable continual visibility of research ideas to industry. And, news articles about the event will also enable continual visibility.
